Wernigerode

The state-approved resort town of Wernigerode is also known as “The colourful town on the Harz” due to its colourful old town. It is nestled in the Harz mountain landscape and, together with the neighbouring village of Schierke, extends right up to the Brocken.

The town has numerous sights and attractions to offer and therefore attracts visitors from all over the world.

We are located in an area steeped in history:

The Haus am Klint is located directly on the hill on which the town of Wernigerode was founded, while the Haus am Markt is only about 200 metres away.
This is where the monks of the “Himmelspforte” monastery once founded a settlement and laid the foundations for the later town of Wernigerode.

Opposite the church, the Gadenstedt House catches the eye with its wooden porch and rich decorations.
Because of its beauty, it was often used as a backdrop, for example Otto filmed his “7 Dwarfs” there.

Further to the right is the “Büßergässchen” (little penitents’ alley): it connects the Oberpfarrkirchhof with Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Strasse through the centre of two houses.

A little way in the direction of the market square, you can see the Leaning House. Inside there is a museum on the history of half-timbered buildings and changing art exhibitions.

Here you are right in the centre: the town hall, the smallest house, various museums and the picturesque old town are all just a few steps away.

The Harz narrow-gauge railway station is just a 5-minute walk away, and the Harz narrow-gauge railway’s glass workshop is right next door.

The city bus and other public transport, which will take you on excursions and hikes in the Harz mountains and the national park, are very close by at the Forum and Heltauer Platz.

Due to the central location, the sights of the city are quickly and easily accessible, as are the pretty shops and many cosy cafés and good restaurants in the immediate vicinity, which invite you to stroll and linger.
